2023 Hyundai Veloster vs. 2023 Toyota 86

The 2023 Hyundai Veloster is a sporty car with dazzling performance, standardized safety gear and roomy cabin. How does it compare to the 2023 Toyota 86, a coupe coveted for its sleek appearance, superb performance and six speed manual transmission?

Design & Style

The Toyota 86 seats four and has the look of a car made for the race track. Its latest features for the year include lighter weight, an extended wheelbase, greater power and air intakes which offer additional functionality. Its suspension is also stiffer than previous generations and the engineers at Toyota threw in the Gazoo Racing insignia to commemorate the brand’s sports lineage. It has lower ground clearance with front fenders and roof panels made from aluminum.

The Veloster also seats 4 and Hyundai has phased out every variant this year except N. It has the appearance of a sporty hatchback with four doors that is built for speed and maneuverability. Performance tires have also been added and in front it has a grille which is broadly straked with headlamps that have been swept back. The cabin is comfortable and covered in plastic which is tightly grained.

Technology & Safety

The Hyundai Veloster has earned the prestigious Top Safety Pick award courtesy of the IIHS, which is testament to its excellent design and safety features such as blind area monitoring, emergency automated brakes, activated lane control, airbags and adapted cruise control. Comforts within its cabin include wireless charging for smartphones, premium audio and air conditioning.

The Toyota 86 is equipped with most of the features found in the Hyundai, including adapted cruise control; emergency automated brakes, and activated lane control. Its cabin perks include an audio system with 6 speakers, eight inch touch display, and leather upholstery with air conditioning.

Performance

Those that purchase the Toyota 86 will get a flat 4, 2.4 liter engine that can generate 228 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in around six seconds. The Hyundai Veloster is powered by a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 275 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in under 5 seconds. It also uses disc brakes which are vented for all 4 corners, along with a rear suspension that is multilinked and controls which are paddle shifted for greater precision.

The Bottom Line

Both cars seat the same number of passengers and offer comparable safety features. But the Hyundai Veloster has a substantial advantage in horsepower and zero to sixty acceleration times, along with slightly better fuel economy in its manual version. And though the Toyota 86 technically seats 4, its back seats are so tight that many feel it’s better for just two, and all these factors make the Hyundai Veloster the winner.
