2023 Hyundai Sonata vs. 2023 Subaru BRZ

The 2023 Subaru BRZ is an agile coupe with a sleek appearance, excellent external visibility and multiple tire options. But can it beat the 2023 Hyundai Sonata, a classy sedan lauded for its shapely exterior, serene cabin and easy to use infotainment?

Design & Style

The Hyundai Sonata seats five and exudes an expressive frame with an interior that is finely finished. Its newest features for the year include the standardization of the Tech package, the new Night Edition and darkened accents with nineteen inch wheels. It is extremely versatile and can be purchased both in hybrid and gasoline powered form and has multiple trim levels, which include Limited, SE, SEL Plus, and SEL.

The Subaru BRZ has 2 doors and can seat up to four people. Its newest features for the year include a structure which is stiffer, recalibrated suspension, and the option of slippery or sticky tires. Additional power is provided via a bigger flat 4 engine. Its wheelbase has also been extended slightly, and it has a spherical exterior with a grille that is low set and functional sided air vents. Both the back and front fenders display pronounced haunches.

Technology & Safety

The biggest weakness of the Subaru BRZ is that it lacks standardized emergency automated brakes. It does have other features such as airbags, blind area monitoring and notifications for cross traffic in the rear, along with adapted headlights. Its cabin amenities include eight inch infotainment displays, keyless access, and satellite radio with a digitized instrument cluster.

The Hyundai Sonata does have standardized emergency automated brakes, along with activated lane control, blind area monitoring, and a camera with surround view, airbags and adapted cruise control. Its cabin amenities include ten inch touch displays, panoramic sunroof, Bose audio system, powered seats covered in leather that can be cooled or heated, keyless start, and satellite radio with climate control.

Performance

Those who go all out and buy the Hyundai Sonata N Line will get a turbo 4 engine that can generate 290 horsepower that is wedded to an automatic dual clutch eight speed transmission that can accelerate from zero to sixty in just 6 seconds. Those that purchase the Subaru BRZ will get an engine that is 2.4 liter and capable of generating 226 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in around 7 seconds.

The Bottom Line

The Hyundai Sonata seats one more passenger, has a performance advantage and offers standardized emergency brakes, which are all things that the Subaru lacks. And the BRZ’s back seats are barely useable, it has no turbo engine and its fuel economy is only 21 mpg while the Hyundai is 27 mpg, which makes the Sonata the winner.
