2023 Hyundai Santa Fe vs. 2023 Subaru Outback

The 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe is a fabulous SUV with an enhanced transmission, highly efficient powertrains and both plugin and hybrid options. But is this enough to beat the 2023 Subaru Outback, an SUV which has received acclaim for its large touch display, stellar safety record and diverse handling?

Design & Style

The Subaru Outback uses a wagon style body and can hold up to five people. Its flat four power and all wheeled traction gives it exceptional flexibility. Its latest feature for this year is the Wilderness version, which comes complete with more ground clearance, copper accents; all terrain based tires and enhanced suspension. The roof rack on top can be used to carry camping or recreational equipment.

The Hyundai Santa Fe also carries five, and its latest feature for the year is the introduction of the hybrid plugin option, along with the XRT trim. The exterior is covered in elegant trim and cutlines, and those that purchase XRT will get darkened wheels. The cabin is well organized with a lowered beltline, large infotainment screens and pod style vents. Passengers will also sit in quilted leather seats and get their infotainment via ten inch displays.

Technology & Safety

The Hyundai Santa Fe is an award winning sport utility vehicle, having captured the IIHS Top Safety Pick+. The NHTSA was equally impressed and bestowed a perfect 5 star review. This is because it is equipped with every modern feature such as blind area monitoring, a camera with surround view, emergency automatic brakes, adapted cruise control and parking sensors. Perks within its cabin include the option of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, Harmon Kardon sound system, satellite radio, remote start and seats that can be cooled or heated.

The Subaru Outback has also done an exemplary job on its crash tests and comes with most of the safety features found in the Santa Fe, such as automated emergency brakes, blind area monitoring, adapted cruise control and a camera with a 180 degree view. It has also earned the Top Safety Pick+ as well as five star NHTSA review, and perks within its cabin include Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, sound insulation, climate control, powered tailgate, and a sunroof with seats that can be heated or cooled.

Performance

The Subaru Outback is powered by a turbo 4, 2.4 liter engine that can generate 260 horsepower. The Hyundai Santa Fe is also powered by a turbo 4 that is 2.5 liter and capable of generating 277 horsepower.

The Bottom Line

Both SUVs are tied when it comes to seating capacity, performance and safety credentials. But the Hyundai offers more cargo space, and this combined with the Subaru Outback’s bland interior makes the Hyundai Santa Fe the winner.
