2023 Hyundai Kona vs. 2023 Kia Sorento

The 2023 Hyundai Kona is an SUV with excellent infotainment, superb fuel economy and core safety features such as emergency automated brakes. But what happens when it faces off against the 2023 Kia Sorento, an SUV which is notable for its powertrains and spacious interior?

Design & Style

The Kia Sorento offers 3 row seating with the ability to seat up to 7 people. It comes in five trims, which are SX-Prestige, LX, SX, EX and S. Its newest features for the year include a hybrid plugin powertrain and ten inch touch displays for most variants. Its exterior features metallic fillips with a grille that is razor meshed. It has lots of space for cargo along with USB ports.

The Hyundai Kona seats five passengers and its newest features for this year include the addition of the Kona N and Kona N-Line variant, as well as an electric edition. It retains the upright exterior that was seen in previous generations, but a number of revisions have been made. The Kona now features beefed up dark cladding that is visible along the bottom, with a pinched grille and nineteen inch wheels. The intakes have also been enlarged to accommodate the turbocharger.

Technology & Safety

The Hyundai Kona has done exceedingly well on its safety reviews. For instance, it earned a perfect 5 star rating via the NHTSA, and it equipped with numerous protective functions such as activated lane control, emergency automated brakes, parking sensors, airbags and adapted cruise control. Luxuries within its cabin include ten inch infotainment screens, dual USB ports, the choice of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and climate control.

The Kia Sorento only earned 4 stars from the NHTSA. The IIHS wasn’t thrilled with its headlights and rated them poorly. However, it does have many of the features found in the Kona, such as parking sensors, emergency automated brakes and blind area monitoring, and luxuries inside its cabin include nappa leather seats, eight inch touch displays, panoramic sunroof, and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Performance

The Kia Sorento is powered by a turbo 4, 2.5 liter engine that can generate 281 horsepower, which enables it to accelerate from zero to sixty in 5.7 seconds. Those that purchase the Hyundai Kona N will get a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 276 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in 5.3 seconds.

The Bottom Line

Both SUVs are basically tied when it comes to performance. However, the Kona surpasses the Sorento when it comes to safety credentials, and although the Sorento technically seats two more passengers, anyone who has actually test driven it knows that the middle and back seats are quite small and should rarely be used. And this combined with the Sorento’s inferior fuel economy makes the Hyundai Kona the winner.
