2023 Hyundai Ioniq vs. 2023 Toyota Corolla

The 2023 Toyota Corolla is a compact automobile with balanced handling, excellent fuel efficiency and lots of safety gear. Can it compete with the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq, a compact car praised for its handsome appearance, incredible fuel efficiency and simple to use interface?

Design & Style

The Ioniq is a hatchback which holds five people, and it can be purchased as a hybrid plugin. It has some of the best gas mileage on the market which will greatly appeal to those concerned about rising gas prices. Its diminutive size makes it perfect for congested urban settings but the cabin is spacious, with almost 27 cubic feet being reserved just for cargo space.

The Toyota Corolla can be purchased in the form of a hatchback or sedan. Its handling is much more precise than previous generations, and the steering is well weighted with outstanding body control. The cabin finish is great for the price, but practically speaking it can only seat 4 adults. The cargo hold is expansive, especially in the hatchback edition, and its exterior profile is quite conventional, though the hatchback variant is more utilitarian and stylish.

Technology & Safety

The Corolla has done well on its crash tests, earning a 5 star NHTSA review along with the IIHS Top Safety Pick award. However, some versions have headlights which were rated marginally. Its primary protective features include blind area monitoring, activated lane control, emergency automatic brakes and adapted cruise control. Its cabin amenities consist of climate control, seven inch touch display, the choice of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and proximity key.

All versions of the Hyundai Ioniq come with emergency automated brakes and activated lane control. It has earned superior ratings from the IIHS and includes most of the features found on the Corolla, including pedestrian detection, blind area monitoring and automated high beams. Its cabin amenities include Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, climate control, seats that can be cooled or heated; satellite radio and eight inch touch displays.

Performance

Being a hybrid, the Hyundai Ioniq utilizes a thirty two kilowatt electrical motor which is combined with an inline 4, 1.6 liter engine to generate a total of 139 horsepower. The Toyota Corolla has an inline 4, 1.8 liter engine that can also generate 139 horsepower that is wedded to a transmission which is continuously variable.

The Bottom Line

The Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Ioniq are evenly matched when it comes to safety and performance. But fuel economy is where the Hyundai leaves the Toyota in the dust, at 58 mpg for the Ioniq versus only 31 mpg for the Corolla. And this combined with the Toyota Corolla’s tight rear seat and small trunk makes the Hyundai Ioniq the winner.
