2023 Hyundai Veloster vs. 2023 Toyota Prius

The 2023 Toyota Prius is notable for its exceptional fuel economy, generous cargo hold and AWD availability. But is this enough to beat the 2023 Hyundai Veloster, a vehicle which has been praised for its safety, performance and lovely appearance?

Design & Style

The Hyundai Veloster is a 4 door hatchback that can carry four people. It has a sports tuner look which will be very attractive to high school and college students, as well as young adults. Its widened straked grille can be seen in front, with headlights that are swept back and a frontal drive layout. The cabin is covered with plastic surfaces that are tightly grained and pleasing to the eyes.

The Toyota Prius is an impressive looking car, especially when purchased in the Nightshade version, as it comes with door handles, badges and even wheels that are completely blacked out. The exterior is covered in triangle based shapes with smooth surfaces here and creased areas there. It is a hatchback with nicely sculpted sides and comes in a number of variants, including a plugin hybrid.  It can seat a total of five passengers.

Technology & Safety

The Toyota Prius is equipped with the latest safety tech and has done well on most of its safety tests. However, it didn’t do well enough to earn the Top Safety Pick this year, an award it earned in the past. Its protective features include pedestrian detection, emergency automated brakes, parking sensors, blind area monitoring and activated lane control. Its cabin comforts include 3 USB ports, Amazon Alexa, seven inch touch display, Bluetooth and Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.

The Hyundai Veloster has earned the Top Safety Pick award this year, and is equipped with features found in the Prius such as blind area monitoring, cruise control, emergency automatic brakes and activated lane control. Its cabin comforts include premium audio, wireless charging for smartphones and air conditioning.

Performance

The Hyundai Veloster is equipped with a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 275 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in less than 5 seconds. This combined with its larger brakes, quick and firm steering with a stiff suspension make it a force to be reckoned with. The Toyota Prius uses an inline 4, 1.8 liter engine that works with a fifty three kilowatt electrical motor and lithium ion battery to generate 121 horsepower. It takes ten seconds for it to accelerate from zero to sixty.

The Bottom Line

Compared to the Hyundai Veloster, the Prius is as slow as a turtle, the result of Toyota’s engineers sacrificing everything for its fuel economy. And this combined with its less impressive safety credentials, lackluster material quality and tight head room in back makes the Hyundai Veloster the winner.
