2023 Hyundai Tucson vs. 2023 Toyota RAV4

The 2023 Hyundai Tucson is a stylish SUV with a bold cabin, the option of a gas or hybrid variant and spacious backseats. But how does it compare to the 2023 Toyota RAV4, an SUV which is coveted for its efficiency, standardized safety gadgets and all-wheel drive?

Design & Style

The Toyota RAV4 seats five people, and its latest features for this year include the option of the SE Hybrid, a six speaker sound system and seven inch touch displays. It is a sporty looking vehicle with sharp and angular lines in its exterior, wheel wells that are squared off and a rugged frame. The cabin is comfortable with plenty of space even for cargo and the seats are well padded.

The Hyundai Tucson also seats five people and has attractive LEDs in front with fenders that have been creased and cut. The interior features hardened bevels with drapes and digital displays inside its central stack, and it has a number of drive modes, including Snow, Mud and Sand which enables it to drive effectively over said surfaces. Those that want maximum performance will purchase the N Line version.

Technology & Safety

The NHTSA has yet to crash test the Tucson, but it has already earned the prestigious Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. This is due to its many protective countermeasures which include standardized emergency brakes, excellent external vision, activated lane control, airbags, and blind area monitoring with adapted cruise control. Luxuries within the interior include Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, ten inch infotainment screens, powered lift gate, panoramic sunroof and air conditioning.

The Toyota RAV4 is equipped with many of the same features as the Hyundai, but its safety ratings aren’t as good. For instance, its LED headlights have been rated marginal and even poor in in some cases, and the NHSTA only gave it a 4 star review for its frontal impact protection rather than five. The thickened roof pillars which partially block the rearview don’t help. Its cabin luxuries include Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, powered seats that can be cooled or heated, and nine inch touch displays.

Performance

The gasoline powered Toyota RAV4 is equipped with an inline 4, 2.5 liter engine that can generate 203 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in 7.4 seconds. The Hyundai Tucson is powered by an inline 4 and electric motor which generate 226 horsepower, enabling it to accelerate from zero to sixty in around 8 seconds.

The Bottom Line

Both vehicles are essentially tied when it comes to seating capacity and performance. That being said, the Toyota RAV4 falls short when it comes to safety. Its poorly rated headlights could create a hazardous situation should they malfunction at night, and this combined with its buzzy inline 4 and excessively small back seat makes the Hyundai Tucson the winner.
