2023 Hyundai Ioniq vs. 2023 Subaru Impreza

The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq is a highly efficient electric car with outstanding fuel efficiency and a user friendly interface. How does it compare to the 2023 Subaru Impreza, a compact vehicle praised for its looks, standardized AWD and solid safety ratings?

Design & Style

The Subaru Impreza can be purchased as a sedan or hatchback, and holds five passengers. Its latest changes for this year include the discontinuation of the Limited edition and the introduction of the paint Sapphire Blue Pearl. The all-wheel drive offers power delivery which is composed and balanced, and buyers have the option of upgrading their cloth seats to leather if they choose.

The Hyundai Ioniq also carries five passengers and can now be purchased as a hybrid or plugin hybrid. Its latest features for this year include sharper styling, extended range and greater availability. It is a hatchback with a teardrop shaped exterior and when the back seats are folded almost twenty seven cubic feet become available for cargo space. Passengers within the cabin will be presented with a functional layout that includes eight or ten inch touch displays.

Technology & Safety

The Hyundai Ioniq comes with numerous modern safety features, such as emergency automated brakes, blind area monitoring, automated high beams, pedestrian detection and adapted cruise control. It has earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick award, and comforts inside its cabin include the choice of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, climate control, satellite radio, a Harmon Kardon sound system and digitized equipment cluster.

The Subaru Impreza has received excellent safety reviews, and is equipped with many of the features found in the Hyundai, including blind area monitoring, adapted cruise control, and activated lane control. However, the manual shift version does not include emergency automated brakes, which is a real let down. Its cabin comforts include Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, USB ports, sound insulation, satellite radio and frontal seats that can be heated.

Performance

The Subaru Impreza is powered by a flat 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 152 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in 9 seconds. The Hyundai Ioniq is powered by an electrical motor that works in conjunction with an inline 4, 1.6 liter engine to generate 139 horsepower. Its propulsion system is so effective that it utilizes the motor to smoothen shifts.

The Bottom Line

In regards to safety and seating capacity, both cars are evenly matched. And while the Subaru Impreza has a slight edge in horsepower and acceleration, the Ioniq has larger touchscreens, more cargo space and an overwhelming advantage in fuel efficiency, at 58 mpg versus only 28 mpg for the Impreza, and in places with high gas prices this matters a lot, which makes the Hyundai Ioniq the winner.
